Although swimming may have spent a time as a sport for the wealthy Caucasian male, today the faces of American swimming are much more diverse. Still, in past years there have been very few athletes of color in swimming, especially when compared to almost any other sport. However, that is finally changing, and at a rapid pace.
Just recently, the Friends of Gunnison Beach did a Nude Polar Bear bare swim in the icy cold winter waters of the beach. Polar bear swims are the one thing I will never do! Give me warm weather and a nude beach, please!

Members of the Ice Breakers, the Coney Island Polar Bear clubs and other brave bathers stripped down to their trunks or dressed in costumes for the annual New Year's Day splash. Some people hit the surf dressed only in bikini briefs.

Polar Bear Plunges, where people take a dip in very cold bodies of water during the winter months when people aren't usually swimming outdoors, are often undertaken to benefit some type of charity, but they're also a way to ring in the new year. This January 1 saw people diving into the Atlantic Ocean on a relatively mild day in New York, from the beaches of Coney Island in Brooklyn, and also in much colder temperatures around the US, including Minnesota and Massachusetts.

Thousands gathered yesterday on the Coney Island boardwalk to once again welcome in the new year by shedding their clothes and hurtling themselves into the chilly Atlantic Ocean waters. The Coney Island Polar Bear Club swim saw a turn out of well over 2, and while some opted to watch and cheer from the comfort of dry land, almost half came determined to taste the Atlantic's frigid brine. Sweeney was one of first who gathered on the boardwalk, an area that became a kind of awesome, stationary street parade complete with dance music, dancing, costumes, food, and lots of half naked shouting.

Despite huge online interest totaling to thousands of hits, participation in the inaugural meeting of the New Orleans Polar Bears was limited to a tight pack of brave men. All pioneers share one ideal. Their potential for success outweighs their fear of failure.
